I am only able to identify three people in this photo. The youngest standing person in the center of the photo is Ross Cubert Cookus. Second and third from left are Minerva Ellen Doty Cookus and her husband Joseph S. Cookus. The photo was taken between 1890 and 1895, best guess. These would be the surviving children of this couple.
The children of this couple are:
William P. Cookus (1857-1932)
Andrew D. "A.D." Cookus (1859-1927)
James Henry "Henry" Cookus (1861-1906)
Alwilda Mae "Allie" Cookus (1864-1898)
Charles J. Cookus (1866-1945)
Irena R. Cookus (1868 - ?)
Mary Eliza Cookus (1870-1941)
Flora E. Cookus (1876-?)
Ross Cubert Cookus (1878-1952) identified above as the youngest person standing.
Hi! I just found your site. My ancestor is Joseph, and William through William's son George. George was my grandfather!
ReplyDeleteI have a family tree on myheritage.com under Lizabeth Irene DeForde Goldsworthy.
I'm so glad I found this photo! One of the Cookus sons, Andrew, was my great grandfather. His daughter, Ruah, was my grandmother. Until now I had no photo of Joseph, just one of his brother, Robert. Thanks for posting this.
ReplyDeleteJim O.
Thank you so much for your site and this picture. Ross Cubert Cookus was my great grandfather! His daughter Irene was by beloved grandma.
ReplyDeleteDarcy
Darcy,
DeleteThank you for reaching out to let me know Ross was your great grandfather. I so wish I could figure out who each of the others are in that photo. The only obvious ones were Ross and his parents. Do you have any family photos that might help solve the mystery?
Leslie
I'm so sorry, I wish I did. The only photos I have are of my grandmother. I found your site by googling her (Irene Waunita Cookus) and following some links. Ross Cookus married Minnie Yant.
DeleteMs. Lawson,
ReplyDeleteMy great grandfather was William P. Cookus and my 2 times great grandfather was Joseph Cookus. Do you have ANY information about Joseph Cookus' father? I have tried ancestry and can only narrow it down to 3 possibilities in Shepherdstown: Michael, Jacob and John Henry. Unfortunately, I cannot make the connection between Joseph and his father, whoever that may have been. Any ideas?
Also, can I get a copy of that photo. It is priceless!
Ray Cookus
Ray, are the son of Bill and Louise Cookus? My mother, Fyrne, was Bill's younger sister.
DeleteYep, that's me Beth. How are you doing?
DeleteHi Ray, I'm now living in Canada with my husband and 2 grown children. I've been trying to work on a family tree.
DeleteI'm also on facebook if you want to catch up.
Ray, If I can get your email address I'll gladly forward a copy of the photo.
ReplyDeleteAs to father, my research leads me to believe that Michael is the father. Michael was married/widowed 3 times. But, I find Michael with Joseph in Defiance County, Ohio when Michael's wife died. Michael then went back to WV.
Leslie,
ReplyDeleteMy email address is raycookus@gmail.com.
That is terrific news about Michael Cookus being Joseph's father. I had narrowed it down to him, but could not find any kind of backup. Where did you find the information about Michael being with Joseph in Ohio?
Thanks for your help,
Ray
Reading old newspapers. And military files. And census. And any other documents I can get hold of.
DeleteLeslie, Awed by the picture! Love a copy if possible! I am descended from Joseph and Minerva Ellen Cookus through daughter Alwilda May, who married Merton B Scott in 1879. There were 3 sons, Charles, Merton, Ernie, and daughter Ella, my grandmother. She married Vern Smith in Nebraska and had 4 children, sons Clarence, Duane, and daughters Carmen and Laverne, all born in Nebraska. Carmen was my mother and married Jerome DeDisse, Jr., in Colorado. Her children were Patricia, Yvonne, Suzanne and Jerome III. Yvonne B
